Orioles Fastpitch Sweeps Twin Bill Over Edison

St. Louis Park cranks out 28 hits in doubleheader win Thursday.

Winning sure produces lots of smiles. The SLP Girls fastpitch softball squad was grinning from ear to ear on Thursday at Aquila Park as they crushed Minneapolis. Edison twice by 15-5 and 13-2 margins in two 5-inning games. The bleachers were rocking with lots of Park fans and the doubleheader was broadcast on Park TV 16.

In game one, the Orioles battled back after a rocky start to win 15-5. Junior pitcher Kristen Botzet had six strikeouts and recorded the win. Game two featured freshman pitcher Lauren Resnick securing a 13-2 win with eight strikeouts.

After losing eight seniors from last year's team, coach Al Wachutka knew he was facing a rebuilding season for 2012. This year's team features only four returning letter players in senior captain Bria Evans, juniors Botzet and Jenna Laidlaw, and freshman Resnick. There were still five open starting spots and big shoes to be filled.

The team is comprised of 15 girls: three seniors (Evans, Kayla Salsburg and Morgan Myhra), two juniors (Botzet and Laidlaw), six sophomores (Lauryn Myhra, Maria Barr, Sophie Machlem-Johnson, Sarah Garcia, Olivia Peterson and Anna Basil) and four freshmen (Resnick, Autumn Balesteros, Shelby Borash and Bella Halstead).

The Orioles will participate in the Bloomington Kennedy Classic this weekend at the Dred Scott Fields. Hopefully, they can keep this winning streak.
