Change is Hard.....or is it?

In today's world, we have access to so many resources and we can all learn how to do something. What is the difference between following through and swimming in status quo?

Every day a friend, a family member or a client tells me that it's hard. Change is hard, moving into action is hard and standing up for yourself is hard. I understand fully that their experience is that of "hard." I always tell them that it's hard until it's not. They laugh; I don't because I mean it. The difference between hard and easy is one second and intention you create behind it. If you believe it's hard, then it is. The problem is that many of us have heard that change is hard since we were born and we came to believe it. It all starts with changing the thoughts and affirming otherwise. Then - it takes doing something about it.

In today's world, we have access to so many resources and we can all learn how to do something. What is the difference between following through and swimming in status quo? It is making a decision and then staying true to it. But how many of us decide something and then quit soon after it's not giving us results we need? The secret is action with perseverance.

Many of my girlfriends bring up weight loss as an impossible task. They all tell me they are working so hard and nothing happens. Without fail, when I look closely - the actions do not support the intention behind it. I have used this excuse myself many times when in fact: I never worked hard enough on it. It is much easier to blame the genetics than to take responsibility. If we want something, then we have to get up and create the best environment for it and just do it. It really is - sometimes - that easy, but many times we lie to ourselves. I found this quote the other day and thought it would be perfect to share:

"Renunciation on its own has no staying power. You can renounce bananas all you like, but if you continue to live in your banana home on your banana street, if you keep your job at the banana warehouse and hang out with your banana-gobbling friends, you'll be eating bananas before you know it. Practice is doing the work. It is following up your intention with action." -Rolf Gates, Meditations from the Mat

I absolutely love this and when I first read it - it blew me away. Think about your life and a change you want to make. You keep thinking about it and talking about it, but the current environment still support the "old" ways you are trying to change. Change is actually really easy, if you approach it as such. Start being honest with yourself. What do you do in your day that supports your goal? Who do you spend your time with? Every day a small thing towards your goal can create a very drastic change in the long-term. Start today and start small, but do something. I promise you will be better for it.

I get a lot of resistance from folks on this one, so if you disagree and want to chat - let me know and I would love to dig deeper. JB
