Vote Gregg: Financially sound Decision Making

We are all faced with difficult budget decisions these days. Just as we do at home, careful choices with financial resources is critical. Financially sound decision making means protecting a strong financial position for the City.  It also means ensuring a reasonable level of property tax for homeowners and business owners alike.

We all depend on quality services delivered by our City Staff.  We expect running water, flushing toilets, fires extinguished, crime stopped, and snow cleared from our streets.  We know that these services come at a financial cost.  As a public employee myself, I understand the challenges of providing these services efficiently and effectively.

I also understand what it means to budget in the public sector with financial responsibility, making sure we “live within our means” as a local government to ensure a strong financial future.  Let’s face it, local governments and Minnesotans alike have been hurting financially over the past few years.  We all have to budget and use our resources efficiently at home – and we expect the same from our City government.

My family lost my Dad a few years ago.  My Mom still lives in the Browndale Neighborhood – the house I grew up in.  Property tax bills are a big deal – for both her as well as many others.  As opposed to the incremental discussions I see currently, I want to ensure there is a long term comprehensive discussion on the impacts of the increasing cost of providing services and the burden that places on taxpayers.

I believe we need vigilant conversations about property tax increases within St. Louis Park – balancing the wants and needs of the City with those of each of our neighbors.  It is my priority that residents and business owners are able to afford their life in the Park while the City remains a vibrant and attractive place for people to live and work.
