From our Conversations…Sidewalks and trails

A popular topic of conversation through my campaign has been the recent Connect the Park sidewalk and trail project approved by the City Council.  Here are my thoughts…

I am excited about the opportunities that alternative modes of transportation pose to the Park and our region.  We have a robust network of regional trails that provide for recreational and transportation alternatives that promote vibrant communities.  To that end, I believe it is in St Louis Park’s best interest to ensure accessibility to the regional trail system, giving our residents additional choices in getting to work or having a good time.

You may have heard me say that I believe it is a Councilmember’s job to listen to and act on the will of the community.  To that end, we need to make smart decisions with the addition of sidewalks in our dense residential community.  When viable alternatives, or common sense solutions exist outside of disrupting resident’s real or perceived property – it only makes sense to follow the path of least resistance.

Let’s make sure our community is safe for pedestrians and welcoming to bicyclists and alternative transportation through connections to our regional trails.  In doing so, we do not need to ignore what our collective community asks of their City Government.  In this case, I hear residents concerned over specific portions of the sidewalk plans – citing duplication, impracticality, and financial costs as significant concerns over the proposals.  It is these voices that should guide decision making.

Through listening to you, I plan to act by making make smart, community informed, neighborhood friendly, and most importantly common sense decisions – be it about sidewalks or any other issue that impacts you as a part of St Louis Park.
