What's Your Favorite April Fools' Gag?

This Sunday is the annual day of pranks and practical jokes.

Ah, April Fools' Day. One of the truly underappreciated days on the calendar.

This Sunday is the annual holiday for pranksters and practical jokers, a time when messing with a friend or loved one isn't just OK, it's encouraged (at least by me).

I'm a big fan of gag humor and find it to be an underused form of fun. Maybe too many people are just too uptight these days, but a good prank should show all of us that life really is short—and short on laughs. So when the salt is in the pepper shaker and vice versa, it's worth a chuckle, not a conniption.

Speaking of mixing up the salt and pepper, that is definitely one the best—and easiest—gags you can execute this year. My favorite, however, is putting clear tape on the handle of the sink-side hose (assuming your sink has a sink-side hose). With the tape properly in place, and the hose pointing straight ahead, the first person to turn on the faucet expecting to fill something up will instead get a blast of water in the gut. It's a great gag—just make sure not to forget your handiwork, as yours truly did one year. Because hoses will spray anyone. They're not very discriminatory.

But enough about my favorite gag—what's yours? In the comments section below, share your favorite prank with other Patch readers. Just please keep it in good fun, and family friendly.

I pretty much hate being the recipient of any gag, so I rarely do them to others, but one really good one a former co-worker did was come in early and put a small piece of tape over the laser on the bottom of everyone's computer mouse. Because the tape reflects the light, it prevents the mouse from working, even when plugged in! There were many folks on the floor, looking at the cords and whatnot, trying to figure out why theirs wouldn't work. Pretty funny, but not really one that leaves anyone feeling stupid.

None! Very few people get that the only good prank/joke is one in which the person who is the subject of the prank/joke laughs as loud as the other participants. I have had that happen to me on a few occasions. That takes a level of thought and skill that few really have developed. Much of the April Fool "pranks/jokes" I observed were excuses for low level meanness or worse.

That's a good one, Emily. Looks like tape is very useful when it comes to April Fools'—both of our favorite gags use it!

There are many pranks that are not mean, but just plain fun, especially with family, such as getting up in the morning and announcing we got a foot of snow last night.

Best one was a co-worker had me call her dad, who is a season ticket holder for the Packers. I was calling from their ticket office stating that he missed the deadline for the renewal of his tickets. He bought it hook, line and sinker. It's been about 6 years since then and he still talks about it.
