Rep. Ellison Tours St. Louis Park, Other Areas Hit by Tornado

The congressman said he will "lean on" FEMA to get disaster relief funds.

U.S. Rep. Keith Ellison (DFL-Fifth District) toured in St. Louis Park, Golden Valley, Minneapolis and Fridley on Monday.

Hardest hit was North Minneapolis, but among the three suburban cities Ellison noted a difference: "In St. Louis Park and Golden Valley, a lot of the trees fell on houses." Fridley, by comparison, was somehow spared from suffering as much home damage, he said.

Everywhere, he said, "the community is stepping up and helping each other. They weren't going to let their neighbors suffer alone."

Aid from the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) hinges on whether the storm caused at least $6.9 million in uninsured damage in the Twin Cities. He promised to "lean on" FEMA to push the federal agency to "count everything properly."

Ellison expressed awe at the "power of nature" and vowed to use his own power as a public servant to convene members of the community to help each other.
