Many Have Power Back On, Sabes to Partially Reopen at 2 p.m.

The tornado that first touched down in St. Louis Park Sunday had wind speeds of 110 to 125 mph.

Power is back on in most if not all of St. Louis Park, and the will be partially reopening this afternoon as community members continue to clean up after Sunday’s tornado.

Xcel Energy is still reporting that more than 6,000 Twin Cities residents are without power, but many of the outages are to the north of St. Louis Park, in Golden Valley and Minneapolis. More than 20,000 homes were without power after the storm first rolled through Sunday afternoon.

The Sabes Jewish Community Center was closed Monday because of a power outage, but the center will partially reopen today at 2 p.m. The Early Childhood Center and the Heilicher Minneapolis Jewish Day School will remain closed until at least tomorrow.

No injuries were reported in St. Louis Park due to the storm, but there were at least 30 injuries and one death in North Minneapolis. The National Weather Service has initially rated the tornado as either a strong-end  EF1 or a low-end EF2 tornado, meaning wind speeds were between 110 and 125 mph. A final determination of the tornado’s grade is expected to be made today. The NWS also noted that the widest damage path was 1/2 mile, and that the storm caused at least sporadic damage along a path roughly 14 miles in length. The initial touchdown was in St. Louis Park at around 2:15 p.m. Sunday
