Fall in Love with Freddy

Meet a cute and compact 5-month-old male rat.

Let’s face it—rats get a bad rap. Perhaps they’re just too small for some folks, or for others, the very idea of them conjures up disturbing images of gigantic sewer rats scurrying around the New York subway system. I admit, I get those freak-out moments too, but let me tell you, rats need some sweet lovin’ like any animal! Not to mention, they are highly intelligent and social animals that make wonderful, loving pets.

This week, I am encouraging all of you to open your beautiful eyes and hearts to our newest pet—Freddy. This guy is very little but he has a huge heart and a big personality! In fact, Freddy was brought to the  because he wasn’t getting along with the other rat in the house. Freddy would be best placed in a home where he’d be the only rat. He definitely loves the attention!

Freddy is very curious when people pay him a visit. At first, he likes being under his shelter where he feels safe, but after a few minutes, he warms up and happily checks out his surroundings. Freddy even stands up on his hind legs to reach up to the top of his cage to start sniffing! He’s truly a sweetie, and Carrie Libera of the Animal Humane Society is definitely smitten with this little guy!

Rats are great pets for young children. Since they are larger than hamsters, mice or gerbils, they are easier for kids to handle. They are docile by nature and are highly inquisitive, too. Rats are also pretty low-maintenance. They simply require a clean cage, soft bedding, fresh food and water, and something to hide in or under and use as a den. They also enjoy playing with toys! But most importantly, they love being social, so if you want to truly bond with your rat, make sure to interact and have fun with him or her regularly.

Fun-loving Freddy is ready for you to love him!
