Cavalia Could Gallop Into St. Louis Park

The renowned equestrian show might be held at West End this fall.

A world-renowned equestrian show could be on its way to St. Louis Park.

Officials with Cavalia, which combines horseback riding and theater in a Cirque du Soleil-like performance, are interested in coming to the area this fall, and, if Monday’s City Council meeting was any indication, St. Louis Park seems eager to play host.

“I love the idea,” councilwoman Anne Mavity said. “It would be fantastic for the West End.”

Other council members echoed Mavity’s support, but a number of logistics would still need to be worked out, including lining up the right permits, and handling parking and security.

The show would be held on a vacant, 16-acre lot in an area that is slated to eventually become an office building. Ten of those 16 acres are technically in St. Louis Park, while the other six are in Golden Valley, meaning the two cities would have to reach some sort of agreement. The St. Louis Park City Council would also have to amend the “Temporary Uses” section of the city’s zoning code to make Cavalia a reality. An amendment is expected to be voted on in mid-July.

Cavalia would run from September through mid-November, with a maximum of seven shows per week. Each show would be expected to draw roughly 2,000 spectators, with tickets ranging from $50 to $200.

And no, the West End wouldn’t become overpowered by less-than pleasant odors—a show official said Monday that manure is kept in closed containers that is emptied daily, and the horses are kept very clean.
