Visions for Vacancies: London Square

What should move into this Lake Street building? You tell us.

Several "for rent" signs currently adorn the London Square building on Lake Street, and we'd love to hear what you think should go here.

According to the St. Louis Park Historical Society, the building dates back to 1949 and has been the home of numerous businesses, as well as at least two apartments at one time.

Located across the street from the stadium, London Square is part of a Lake Street area that the city wants to see revitalized, perhaps in the same vein as Excelsior Boulevard.

So what should go here? Post a comment below to share your idea.

Family-style restaurant, open evenings and weekends (compliments M&T Munchies), preferably serving local craft beers (i.e. SLP's Steel Toe, Minnetonka's Lucid, Minneapolis: Boom Island, Fulton, Harriet, Surly). Children's book store (i.e. Red Balloon or Wild Rumpus)

I like those ideas, Matt. Personally, I could see Lake Street becoming the next Excelsior and Grand. I know the city wants to see this area revitalized, and there is plenty of traffic and interest here. Perhaps the starting point would be adding some apartments, then having business grow from there?

Isn't this building too close to schools for alcohol to be served?

That's a very good question, Ken. I'll look to see if there is a city ordinance about that. Even if there isn't, it still is definitely something to consider.

I miss having the little sports store there...don't remember the name of it but they sold a lot of SLP sports stuff and hockey gear. Would love to see something similar come back.

Seems like a very good spot for a Play-it-Again Sports, no? With the school nearby, a lot of student-athletes could benefit from used sporting goods, I'd imagine.

I agree with Mike and Clark on the second hand athletic store. Running gear store? I ran a race a few years back and learned that SLP had the highest rate per capita of runners for that event. Saved me money on the next race event!
