SLP Native Takes the Reins of ‘War Horse’

Rob Laqui operates the hind end of the lead horse, Joey, in the upcoming Orpheum production.

War Horse tells the story of horses in World War I, so it’s not terribly surprising that the equines steal the show.

This is a play soon to hit the Orpheum, though, and the endearing horses are a mix of puppets and human operators—including one St. Louis Park native.

Rob Laqui is one of three people who operate the lead horse, Joey, according to a Pioneer Press profile. More specifically, he operates the “hind” of Joey.

Laqui was born in St. Louis Park in 1978 and grew up in Edina, according to Hennepin Theatre Trust’s Broadway Confidential. He attended Our Lady of Grace then went to St. Thomas Academy in Mendota Heights.

Laqui went to St. Mary's University and moved to New York after graduation. He’s since toured with numerous theater and dance companies.
