Parchment to Pages

Parchment to Pages is an exhibit featuring work by Susan Armington (MN), Lynne Avadenka (MI) and showcasing books from the private collection of Harold and Mickey Smith (MN).

This exhibit offers a unique opportunity to view the rare collection of Hebrew books printed in notable presses from all over the world. Dating back to the 1700’s, these books carry the distinguished markings of their times and travels. Among these books are Siddurim, Mahzorim, Hagadot and others, collected by the Smith family.

In contrast to these historic books, contemporary artist books by Michigan based artist, Lynne Avadenka will be featured. Her pristine, yet thoughtful, work combines an integration of text and image and original bindings with multiple printmaking techniques. Avadenka states that her work is “an engagement with Judaic subject matter - ritual, ceremony and classic texts.”

Also on display are the meticulously crafted map-paintings by local artist, Susan Armington. Her text based work incorporates an array of languages to compose her geographical compositions. One work in particular, Mt. Sinai, a 3 dimensional sculpture, uses words and stories in the various languages that Israel is founded on.
