Derrick Keller, Former SLP Baseball Star, Dies

His death came following battle with a high-risk form of leukemia.

After being diagnosed with a high-risk form of leukemia in August 2011 and subsequently undergoing treatment, Derrick Keller passed away yesterday afternoon.

On his CaringBridge page, Keller's family wrote the following last night:

We are not in a good place right now, We are just numb. DK started bleeding on the inside this morning. This is something we were warned about. He looked so good last night. This afternoon about 4:00, Derrick passed away. We lost our son, and God has him now. He is playing shortstop in a double header right now.

Information about Keller's struggle with leukemia is here. Information about his recent medical progress is here.

Today is a very sad day, not only for St Louis Park Baseball, but for the entire St Louis Park Community. The ranges of emotions being felt are all over the board, and it is very difficult to concentrate on anything. Bob and Linda I am so truly sorry for your loss, Derrick made the world a better place, and there is a hole in the heart of everyone who has been touched by Derrick’s generous soul. I know I speak for the SLP Baseball Community when I say we just lost one of the best baseball players who ever wore an SLP on his chest, having said that, we lost not only a great baseball player, but a better person. God Speed!! Steve Hallfin President of SLP Baseball Association

Well said Steve. Derrick was a humble, kind, team-first person and player who took young players under his wing and made them feel warm and welcome always. My son had the privilege of playing last season as a sophomore and Derrick took him under his wing and taught him how to be even more kind and respectful and humble about victories and instilled a relentless work ethic that earned Derrick a well-deserved Scholarship to play baseball at Soutwest State. He was a fighter all the way through his tragic illness. His warmth and smile will always be a part of our memories. Bless you Bob and Linda you are wonderful parents and people.

Hello from McEwen, TN I have a 20 yr old son, and tears flowed as my heart broke for this precious family. Realizing how fragile life can be, we all need to reach out to each other with more kindness and patience. My son thinks I'm alittle nuts as I required one more hug as he left for class at our community college. Peace and blessings. My life is richer for having had this visit with Derrick. Moments such as I have shared is a true reminder for Derrick's Dad that he is still touching lives. Joan Warren
