Marion Greene, Former DFL State Rep, Seeks Hennepin County Commissioner Seat

Marion Greene aims to replace Commissioner Gail Dorfman, who is not seeking reelection.

Former DFL state Rep. Marion Greene, announced Wednesday that she is running for the Hennepin County District 3 seat currently occupied by Commissioner Gail Dorfman.

District 3 covers St. Louis Park and parts of southwest Minneapolis. Dorfman announced in early November she will not seek re-election.

Greene, 43, has lived in District 3 for 15 years. Before being elected to the House, she worked as a health care policy analyst at St. Jude Medical, focusing on Medicare and payment systems.

“I’m running because I believe there’s place for compassionate, smart activism in County government,” she said in a statement. "I want the enormous financial and human capital of the County to be marshaled smartly and innovatively so that all families thrive. I believe we should be cross-disciplinary with our work in health care, early childhood, transit, and other areas, so that the sum of our decisions is even greater than their parts.

“While in the Legislature, I fought hard for equality and economic justice, early childhood education, and healthcare. With these issues central to the work of the County, I’m thrilled to have this new opportunity to help our entire community thrive, and to be a progressive voice at the county.”

Correction: A previous version of this article implied that Greene had worked as a middle school teacher. Her husband, Bart Cannon, is a middle school English teacher in the Osseo School District.
