About this column:
A weekly look at animals in need of a home from the Golden Valley Humane Society, the closest location to St. Louis Park.Max is one adorable little dog. He was brought to the Animal Humane Society because his owners had to move and couldn’t bring him with them. His previous owners tell the shelter staff he's extremely housetrained and knows basic commands like "sit," "down," "stay," and "come." He's a darling. Max loves to take long walks and is great on a leash. He also loves being a lap dog just as much as he loves being active in the outdoors. This is one pup you can't go home without. Fall is the perfect time to begin something new and to even find that special someone to brighten up your autumn days. This week we have the perfect special someone that will make this season even more unforgettable for you! Sally was brought to the Animal Humane Society because her previous owners did not have enough time to house-train her properly. The AHS recommends setting up a regular routine for outdoor time and even walks coupled with positive reinforcement to help train her to her fullest potential. The AHS Behavior Helpline is also a great resource for helping to train Sally. They …
This week's featured pet is extremely well-trained and a bundle of joy! Jack already knows how to follow the commands of “sit,” “shake,” “down,” and “roll over." He can even do them all in that order! He is prized for being so much fun to be around, and he is extremely smart as well. He is also naturally sweet and affectionate as a companion. What Jack loves the most is a good ear scratching or a belly rub. He also loves going on walks, which is important because Jack is considered overweight. He needs an owner who will give him lots of exercise and a healthy diet to help him slim down to a …
Lola is as lovely as can be! She was surrendered to the Animal Humane Society because her owner was moving out of the country and couldn’t take her along for the journey. Lola will do well in any type of family situation. She is extremely calm, friendly and absolutely loves being petted. She has lived with another cat as well as children, and has clearly shown that she loves the company of others. She also has a beautiful orange and white fur that will need to be brushed regularly to prevent matting. Lola is slightly overweight, so it would be best to pair her up with someone who can …
Norma is a young and lively spirit who has an abundance of charm and love. She arrived at the Animal Humane Society with her brother, Norm, who has since been adopted. Now it’s this special little pup’s turn to find a loving home. Since Norma is only 3 months old, she will need someone who can commit to making sure she is properly house-trained and grows up to be a well-mannered dog. Norma needs a lot of exercise. In fact, outdoor time will be especially important to her as she loves to sniff around the great outdoors. Someone who relishes going on walks and having a playful companion is a …
Amara's gorgeous eyes will easily hold your attention and her genuine warmth will keep you loving her for days on end. Amara and her tiny baby kitten were taken to the shelter together. The two were placed in the home of an Animal Humane Society foster volunteer so Amara could continue nursing her kitten. But after several weeks, and once the kitten was old enough and gained enough weight for adoption, Amara and her baby returned to the shelter. They were both spayed, microchipped, given all of their necessary vaccinations, and then made available for adoption. The kitten now has a loving …
This is the perfect time of the year to get outside. But I'm sure most of you have noticed that things are much sweeter and more memorable when you can share the beauty of a day with someone special. Sport is our featured pet this week, and he is incredibly playful and a most loyal companion. Whether chewing toys, soaking up the rays, going on walks, playing fetch, or sniffing around, he loves it all. Sport is still a puppy, so he would benefit greatly from training classes, which are also offered at the Animal Humane Society. Though he is as sweet as honey, some structure and obedience …
On a rainy day like Monday, there’s nothing like a bright, lovable face to take the gloom away. Just take a look at Chaplin’s cute, little face and you’ll know right away how he got his name. You’ll also quickly find that Chaplin is no doubt a handsome black and white cat with a lot of love to give. Chaplin has been through quite a bit in a short period of time. He was taken to the Animal Humane Society in mid-June after he was found at a public bus stop, along with a few other cats that were placed in a box together. Since then, Chaplin has been adopted out twice. But he has been returned in…
Suzy will melt your heart. Full of genuine sweetness, she will be hard to miss at the shelter. Suzy willingly shows you how absolutely loving she is at first meeting. While waiting at the shelter to be adopted, Suzy sits quietly and calmly up against the cage. She’s just waiting for that special someone to pick her and bring her home to enjoy the summer to its fullest. Suzy was brought to the Animal Humane Society from another shelter that did not have enough room for her. There is little background information on Suzy, but staff members know that she is a joy to be around, walks really well …
Stubby is not at all what his name says he is. Tall, handsome and totally lovable, Stubby originally came from another shelter in Ohio. He has been at the Animal Humane Society for a very short time now but has already made a huge impression. His personality is irresistible! Like most Labs, Stubby has a lot of energy and a wonderful enthusiasm for life. He loves to play and have fun everyday. He is also one who loves to seek out attention and will gladly roll over for a belly rub. People who meet Stubby will also appreciate how often he flashes his charming smile. Will you be the one to make…
This week’s pet really needs some love. Nikki has been patiently waiting for a caring owner to take her home since the beginning of June. That is longer than all of the other cats at the Animal Humane Society right now. It seems people keep passing her by because she’s a little shy at first and likes to hide under her blankets. But despite her shyness, Nikki is a true sweetheart and really enjoys spending time with people. In fact, you’ll just have to take a look under the blankets to discover your perfect companion hiding underneath! Nikki is truly hoping for someone with a quiet home who …
I have a perfect summer companion for you to consider! Foxy is a very social and playful dog that enjoys being around people. Her previous owners tell us she loves going on car rides and running. So if you are a naturally active person, Foxy would love to be your companion! Foxy was adopted from the Animal Humane Society about a year ago, but was returned. During her stay with the shelter she was also diagnosed with Lyme disease. She had no reported health concerns over the last year, and after a recent physical exam this summer, she appears healthy. Foxy should not have any major health …
Today I have the perfect suggestion for all of you looking to add a bit of sunshine to your Minnesota summer: Chewy! He's a simple guy with a big heart. In fact, all you need is a tennis ball and he is nothing but pure joy. Chewy would be best paired with an active owner because he loves running around outside and chasing his toys. He was brought to the Animal Humane Society because his owners had to move and were unable to take him with. He comes from a warm and diverse family environment where there was another dog and a cat who he loved spending time with. So he’s definitely a social pet! …
If you want a furry friend who appreciates simplicity and calm, you will love Mister the cat! Mister was brought to the Animal Humane Society because his owner developed allergies to him. He is an all-around fun and kind cat who enjoys playing on his scratching post, sleeping at the foot of the bed, and napping in the sun. He loves affection and will roll around to show his enjoyment. Mister weighs 16 pounds, so it will be important for his new owners to keep him active and on a good diet so he can have many healthy years ahead of him. Will you add a special Mister to your life? Mister’s …
For those of you looking to adopt a kitten or cat, you’re in luck! In honor of June’s Adopt-a-Cat Month, we are featuring a beautiful and friendly cat named Gizmo. This week’s cat has a calm demeanor, and is very expressive with her warm and loving eyes. Also, as a lap kitty, she absolutely loves having her long fur brushed. Gizmo gets along with other animals but is highly sensitive around children. She was brought to the Animal Humane Society because she was unable to tolerate rough play from a child in her previous home. We’re recommending that Gizmo’s new home be one with only adults, or …
Nola braved the sweltering heat just to meet me at the Animal Humane Society Tuesday morning. She is ultra shy but incredibly sweet and affectionate. She even licked my leg at first greeting! What I love the most is her gorgeous golden coat and loving face. Though there is very little history about Nola, it’s very clear that she loves people and enjoys the outdoors. She’ll definitely be perfect as a summer walking companion. Make sure to hear what Deb Balzer of the Animal Humane Society has to say about our latest featured pet in the video above! Nola’s Adoption Profile: http://www.…
On average, Animal Humane Society dogs are placed into homes within a week. But for one special dog, the wait has already exceeded a month. It’s hard to understand why, because Beeb is so incredibly entertaining and wonderful to be around. Full of energy and love, Beeb needs an owner who can be active with him. He enjoys playing with chew toys and running around outside. He’s also all about cuddling! But his most notable interests are the outdoors and sitting on chairs! We have photos to prove it! And while Beeb loves being around people and other dogs, he is selective about which dogs to …
Sometimes all it takes is one person to bring out the bright, inner sunshine that radiates within us. Will you be that special somebody to help this week’s featured pet sparkle for the world to see? Durango is sweet as pie, but very shy. When the 3-year-old terrier mix arrived at the Animal Humane Society, she was nervous and timid, but shelter staff have spent a lot of one-on-one time with her, helping her to become more comfortable and ready for adoption! Though she’s made great strides, you can tell she still needs an extra boost of love and affection to bring her entirely out of her shell…
I know I have the honor of bringing you the Pet of the Week every Monday, but when I heard about a unique mobile spay/neuter program being launched today, I had to make sure to take time to spread the word! So while today’s column is not about a specific animal, it is still about giving back and helping those in need. Week after week we work toward helping animals find loving homes. But what about all the other animals that do have homes but are with owners who can’t quite afford all the necessary services to care for them? That’s where a gorgeous, brand-new, eye-popping purple bus comes into…
She’s a heartbreaker. With such a beautiful short, soft coat and gorgeous golden eyes, it will be hard to take your eyes off Kalie. She arrived at the Animal Humane Society when her owner could no longer keep her because of a change in living situation. But her previous owner describes Kalie as an active and playful pet that enjoys playing with toys and water. At the shelter, Kalie’s favorite spot is up on a perch looking out the window. It’s a perfect way to display her feminine charm and beauty, while also letting the world know she needs to be loved and hugged! When Kalie first arrived at …
